Become a U.S. Department of Peace Campaign Team Leader

The U.S. Department of Peace Campaign of Kentucky is looking for volunteers to take on the important tasks of Congressional Liason, Outreach Coordinator, Media Coordinator, and Fundraising Coordinator. Over the last two years our local community has done a great deal of foundational work for the campaign in Louisville. Our philosophy as a movement/campaign is to maintain a structure that honors shared responsibility and leadership. An important mission of our campaign is to focus on agreements rather than disagreements when representing the campaign and to resist representing other political motivations as a part of this campaign.  We are looking for motivated, organized people who are called to serve and willing to lead.

General Team Leader Responsibilities and Expectations:

* Hold a conference call or sit-down meeting with your team at least once a month to form a consensus about plans and to delegate tasks. You will not need any special equipment for this call.

* Ask questions and present ideas on an email list. Use the your email list to carry on discussions with your team.

* When necessary, facilitate the formation of smaller teams with their own team leaders to carry out specific tasks (examples: event decorations, coordination of ushers, or transportation)

* Maintain regular one-on-one contact with key members of your team.

* Maintain regular one-on-one contact with the Congressional District Team Leader.

* At each monthly meeting of the Congressional District team, be prepared to discuss your team's progress, plans, and needs.

* Participate in the National Non-Violent Communications Call (conference call) monthly.

* Represent the group as the non-partisan movement it is. Resist and avoid representing other causes as a representative of the U.S. Department of Peace Campaign. For example, discussing your opinions on partisan issues such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or a dislike for any political candidate while representing the campaign. When working in outreach or raising congressional or governmental support and awareness, be in the business of “connecting, not convincing.” Avoid making the other person “wrong”. Rather than focusing on your disagreements, seek out the common ground you share with people.

Volunteer opportunities include:

Congressional Liaison / Team Leader – Interact on behalf of the group with the office of your members of Congress.

Outreach Coordinator / Team Leader – Set up speaking engagements and/or conversations with key figures at organizations that will be positively affected by the passage of the Department of Peace legislation (i.e., churches, service clubs, battered women’s shelters, homeless shelters, schools K through 12, universities, conflict resolution programs, etc.). These speaking engagements will create opportunities to meet others that may want to join the local team. The Outreach Coordinator can also coordinate tables at local events that will help get out the word and build interest in your local network.

Media Coordinator / Team Leader – Contact media outlets in your community regarding the Department of Peace legislation. Possibilities include newspaper articles, radio show appearances, television appearances, hosting annual press conferences, and submitting editorials.

Fundraising Coordinator / Team Leader – Create fundraising events and projects to cover the cost of local activities, including the copying of materials, postage, gas, etc. and to host one event or one campaign recruiting monthly donors for the national effort.

If you would like more information about volunteer opportunities or would like to be considered for the positions below, please contact David W. Allor (502 213-3860) before October 19th. Also, come to our monthly meeting on October 26th. There are many opportunities to serve in whatever way you are able.
