Recomended Event: New Choral Music to Touch the Heart
Mar 02, 2008, 3:00PM, Church of the Ascension, 4600 Lynnbrook Drive, Louisville, KY
Please join me this Sunday, March 2, for a truly remarkable performance.
I have been blessed with the opportunity to collaborate with VOCES NOVAE, a marvelous choral group, under the direction of Frank Heller. As the 2007-2008 artist/composer-in-residence, I have composed two choral works which you can hear for the first time this Sunday.
(Please go to www.voces-novae.org to reserve your tickets. Seating is limited. 502 523 6430 for info.)
This concert's theme is AWAKENINGS: RECONCILIATION -- and features music that speaks to the immense challenges of our time in human history -- a time of tremendous suffering as well as astounding beauty.
I really enjoyed creating my pieces for this concert, which include settings of quotes by Terry Tempest Williams and Dwight D. Eisenhower (an excerpt from his prophetic speech in 1953 in which he told a large gathering of Newspaper editors: 'every gun that is made, every warship launched, and every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense -- a theft...this world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hope of its children.')
The concert also features many exquisite works by American composers, all of which speak to the themes of reconciliation, peace, and hope -- including a breathtakingly beautiful setting of the Kyrie from the Roman Catholic Mass composed by Bellarmine professor Richard Burchard.
I hope to see you Sunday.
